Is India Still a Democracy
Is India Still A  Democracy ?

Well the answer, to this question is not so simple. And during the last few years this question has raised many eyebrows. Well to answer this question, let's first see what exactly democracy is.. Well democracy  means, rule by the people, for the people and of the people.

Is India Still a Democracy

Well if we, at this definition,it means that there are elected representatives which form the government and these representative are elected by the people. And the second part of this definition is quite interesting, that is the rule should be for the people, this means that the government should make laws which benefits the people of the whole country. But if we look at the last few years since BJP government came into power. The laws made for the country are biased, they favour only a certain sect or community based on religion, economic background and social status. And this is division made by laws is not at all acceptable in democracy. This leads to a principle of majoritarianism, where the majority community enjoy their rights at the expenses of minorities. This principle is very dominant in the laws made by the BJP government, hence India is moving towards a majoritarian state.

Secondly, in a democracy all people should enjoy some basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. I think that the right of freedom of speech and thought is among the most important rights. If we look at the last few years, many journalists and reporters have been arrested and detained and this crime was just reporting what didn't pleased the government. What basically is the policy of government, is that anything(press reports, journalists, newspaper) which they find against them they portray that thing in such a way that looks anti-national and this generated mass support against that particular thing. This crushes the voice of many minorities that just wanted to raise voice for thier basic rights. This policy of government is very dangerous and important to understand. Thus helps them to manipulate the emotions of so many innocent people for their own interests.

Lastly, there is an enormous growth of communal politics during the last few years. Religions sentiments are being used to win elections and carry on campaigns. Let's look at an example to understand it in a better way,in the year 2019 BJP used that Pulwama Attack and surgical strike to agitate mass support. If we look at that issue with a closer look, we find that the hate against Pakistan(Muslims) among Indians was manipulated in the form of a fight against terrorism. Whereas it was just a master plan to win elections and a dirty communal political game. All these things are clearly visible all we need to do is to remove the religious barrier and unite to fight against these policies of government. But if all these policies continue India will no sooner turn into a dictatorship..and these will be the darkest hour in the history of India.
